The Benefits of Massage

Massage is a manual therapy addressing muscles, their attachment to bone, tendons and ligaments surrounding joints. It is believed that massage has been used as a form of manual therapy since 2700 B.C. The Greeks and Romans used massage before and after sport and during convalescence as well as treatments for various conditions i.e. insomnia and digestive problems. In more recent years massage has become more widely accepted by practitioners involved in various forms of medical and complementary treatments.

Over a period of time ,either because of joint damage, soft tissue injury or poor postural alignment, muscles can shorten or weaken, which can cause pain to the muscle or joint or surrounding soft tissue.

This can occasionally lead to nerve pain, referred pain or toxin build up in the tissue. Massage works on the muscles and soft tissue, easing tension, alleviating muscular spasm and rebalancing stressed and weakened muscles. This with the help of stretches and exercises, can, in turn, relax the adverse pull on joints by tight muscles and correct muscular imbalances.

Although Sports and Remedial Massage share many basic principles, movements and benefits, the application and aims of the massages are a little different.

Sports Massage

This has become more widely recognized in recent years as a form of regular therapy for injury prevention, enhanced sporting performance and to aid recovery following sporting activity, in the regular and part time athlete.

Sports Massage can be applied following soft tissue injury to speed recovery and during rehabilitation. It is also widely used during endurance training to help prevent fatigue, repetitive strain and effects of overuse.

The application of Sports Massage by a skilled therapist is of great value post exercise for relieving the effects of delayed onset muscle soreness.
